New AI tool to help reduce death risk in
hospitalised patients

New Delhi, Sep 16 (IANS) A game-changing development in healthcare technology has come from a team led by researchers of Indian origin. They have introduced CHARTWatch, a novel AI-based system designed to identify the hospitalized patients who are at high risk of deterioration, thus aiming to drastically cut the occurrence of unexpected deaths.

Key Characteristics and Applications of CHARTWatch

CHARTWatch Early Warning System: One of the most advanced early warning tools available, CHARTWatch has the capability to sense even the first murmurs of a health disturbance. So, this will in turn alert the health care professionals who can consequently address such conditions timely before it gradually worsens and hence prevent it to turn into a serious complications leading to requirement of ICU admissions

Research and Evaluation Background : A clinically field-tested system was developed from the health information of 13,649 individuals aged between 55 and 80. A comparison was made between patients treated in the usual care manner, those monitored with CHARTWatch, and control subjects from subspecialty units that did not employ CHARTWatch. In conclusion, the overall judgement has been that monitoring with CHARTWatch was better able to both improve patient’s outcomes because it alerted clinicians precisely when they needed to know

Operational Efficiency: The communication style of the AI system was quite interesting. CHARTWatch made the alerts delivered in real time to the clinicians. The app also operationalized sending 2 daily emails to nursing teams, as well as daily updates for the palliative care services. This would allow for anticipatory patient outreach with any potential issues identified and addressed promptly.

Enhanced Care Pathways: The system required the implementation of targeted care paths coordinators managed for identified high risk enrollees. The work diets in this include but are not limited to, nursing observation of the patients working closely with physicians and more. This standardised the processes of patient care and improved decision-making and treatment.
Practical Point: Use of AI tools such as CHARTWatch will need to be accompanied alongside robust evaluation for safety and effectiveness, according to Amol Verma MD, MSc (@drverma), a clinician-scientist at St. Michael’s Hospital, Unity Health Toronto Hence AI-based early warning systems could be a tool to reduce hospital-related sudden deaths.

Study Insights: “This is one of the most important parts in terms of figuring out how these AI technologies are being used in the real world,” research co-author Dr. Muhammed Mamdani, associate director, University of Toronto It evaluates the performance of not only CHARTWatch, but also difficulties in executing these AI solutions efficiently within a clinical space.

It is an important stage in the merging of AI applications into outpatient healthcare segments [37]. That any advanced technology will advance the outcomes in patient safety and mortality rates. CHARTWatch demonstrates how AI is evolving and it could be an exciting move forward in the pursuit of better medical care.
